CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
JUNIPER
The only thing standing between us and the castle was a massive lake and a waterfall that came from the mountains. The sound of it splashing against the rock drowned out everything else around us. The water was crystal clear with a few fish swimming around at the bank. Lily pads floated throughout it, as well as some bright pink flowers.
The castle loomed over us and I wondered what we would find inside. Were the priests there? Were they still alive? I swallowed back the lump that formed in my throat.
âItâs real,â Reva breathed hard through her mouth. âI mean, I knew it was⦠but this⦠this is something else. This is real.â
Ryven adjusted the leather bag over his shoulder and unsheathed both of his blades. There was dried blood caked under her nose, which at some point, she had given up trying to wipe away. I couldnât even imagine the way I looked. We hadnât bathed in days, the dirt and dust from the mountain coated our visible skin and our clothes hung on us. Ryven pulled our cloaks free from his bag just as thick dark clouds rolled through again. Bright white snow flurries swirled around us within minutes.
I wrapped my arms around myself as a shiver took over my body. All I could think about was a bath, a warm meal, and a comfortable bed to sleep in. I hoped thatâs what we would find on the other side of the castleâs massive entrance. We skirted around the large lake and walked up the paved path to the massive, jewel-adorned doors but we didnât make it very far before something wrapped around my ankle. The air was stolen from my lungs as I was yanked to the ground. I grunted as my chin connected with the stone pathway and blood filled my mouth. My vision swam as I tried to stand up but whatever was wrapped around my ankle continued to tighten. Neither Reva nor Ryven noticed Iâd been yanked down. They were too busy staring at a different kind of foe that I couldnât make out with all the moisture in my eyes.
A tight grip wrapped around my other ankle and heaved me across the short grass around the path. I kicked my legs but it was no use, whatever had me was much stronger than I was. I fought for the blade at my thigh and I spit the blood collecting in my mouth. My core wasnât near as strong as I needed it to be but I tried all the same. I wrenched my body up as I was pulled across the grass and my eyes bugged out. A human wasnât pulling me across the grass. No, it was something worse, something I couldnât fight on my own. It was a vine wrapped around both of my legs.
All the same, I heaved myself up again and sliced at the tethers around my ankles and something screamed in the distance. My butt burned from where it had been dragged across the paved path and then the dirt and rocks.
